To tax or not to tax? Measure Z extension discussed for November ballot

play-sharp-fill

Eureka, Ca., (KIEM)- Will Measure Z go back to the voters for renewal in November? The one cent sales tax would not increase, but rather the termination date would be pushed into the future.

And that topic brought speaker after speaker, from the local Boys and Girls Club, and Arcata Fire (Chief Justin McDonald), public works (Director Thomas Mattson), and juvenile counseling (Cedric Aaron), to the podium before the board of supervisors. Their message: Measure Z funds are already making a difference, and the supervisors should put it back up to the public to renew the tax. Only one speaker opposed the action, saying the county could get by on a smaller budget.
