Air Quality ruled “Unhealthy” in Hoopa”: Mill Creek 1 Fire persists

Hoopa, Ca., (KIEM)- Unhealthy and very unhealthy: that is how experts are characterizing the air quality in Orleans, Hoopa, and Willow Creek. With smoke levels at their current rate, the air is dangerous not only for sensitive groups, but for everyone.

Air quality is also expected to continue and even worsen as the Mill Creek 1 Fire pushes on.

Highway 96 is still closed from Bull Creek to Mill creek because of fire behavior.

Fire fighters have been working to secure the southern line, fighting back the arson caused Mill Creek 1 Fire. Firing operations are also underway to the north west corner of the fire, in hopes of protecting the area east of Mill Creek Road. Controlling the northwest flank will help protect timber management areas.

An investigation is still underway, as the person responsible for starting the fire on tribal lands is still at large. A $10,000 reward remains available for anyone with information about the arsonist. Tips are being taken at 1-800-468-4402.
