Reckless driver leaves CHP on a pursuit through Humboldt County

California Highway Patrol received multiple calls on a reckless driver just after 10 p.m. on Saturday night. Later, leaving CHP on an 18-minute pursuit.

29-year-old, Peter Rigden of Klamath, was traveling Northbound on Highway 101. He was driving a 2004 Toyota Tacoma, while towing a jet ski on a single axel trailer.

He led CHP on a five-minute pursuit before pulling over on the Loleta off ramp. Rigden sat there for three minutes and then took off at 80 mph.

CHP laid down spike strips on the King Salmon overpass. And then again on Humboldt Hill after Rigden continued to drive on flat tires. Rigden was able to continue into Eureka, where he swerved into two parked cars. His trailer and jet ski eventually broke off. CHP conducted a pit maneuver, terminating the pursuit at 5th and D St.

Five CHP units were deployed. The reckless driving was first reported in Garberville at 10:10. Callers say Rigden was driving against traffic with his lights off, trying to run people off the road, and was swerving. Rigden is being charged with felony evading, DUI, and two charges of hit and run. No injuries were reported.
