Humboldt Supervisors consider zoning change to allow for controversial cannabis facility

Humboldt County Supervisors are considering a zoning change, to allow for Mercer Fraser to move forward with a cannabis manufacturing facility in Willow Creek.

The property is located on State Route 96, and Mercer Fraser wants the 15 acre property rezoned from “highway commercial use”, to “heavy industrial”, to allow for a cannabis extraction facility. However, some members of the Hoopa Valley Tribe are against the plan.

The facility would be near to the Trinity River, so they say not only will it be a risk to salmon populations, but also to safe drinking water for Eastern Humboldt residents. They also worry it’s too close to Trinity Valley Elementary School.

A California assembly delegate says he hopes the board will pull the application and allow for a more transparent process with the community.

Mercer Fraser denied requests for comment on the project., and a phone call to supervisor Ryan Sundberg was not returned. This topic will be discussed at the Humboldt County Supervisor’s meeting Tuesday morning, which starts at 9:00AM in the Board Chambers of the Humboldt County Courthouse.
