City of Arcata brings in New Year’s Day responsibly

Arcata, Ca.,(KIEM) The holiday celebrations are finally over and Humboldt County residents are back to business. This year law enforcement was heightened in wake of the New Year holiday to ensure the safety of residents but wasn’t needed too much within the City of Arcata.

Chief of Police, Brian Ahearn of the Arcata Police Department, shared that the city plaza, one of the hot-spots around this time of year was surprisingly quiet and for the most part all residents did their civil duty.

“We estimated in the Downtown area perhaps 5-700 people were here throughout the evening. We had a few arrests that were alcohol-related but no reported fights people were very responsible,” said Chief Ahearn. “Quite frankly, the designated driver option we heard a lot of that discussion going and we saw a lot of Taxi cabs in the area.”

Chief Ahearn said himself, and several other officers from the department patrolled not just the plaza but the street throughout the City of Arcata.
