Coast Guard of Humboldt Bay Honors Aircrew 6541

EUREKA (KIEM) – It’s been over two decades, since coast guard aircrew 6541 attempted to save a distressed sailboat.

This morning, the Coast Guard honored the lives of the men who lived by the motto “So others may live.”

Several family members of the fallen crew were at the service.

Twenty-five years ago, four person Aircrew 6541 attempted to rescue a sailing vessel that was in distress out in Shelter Cove. But heavy fog made the operation difficult and while trying to save the boat, the crew struck a cliff.

Since that tragic accident, the Coast Guard have been assessing their Risk Management Program.

Later in the afternoon, a wreath was laid near the site of the crash in Shelter Cove.
