Arcata Police Department encourages Arcata Citizen’s to register Video Surveillance Cameras

Arcata, Ca. (KIEM) The Arcata Police Department is encouraging community members to utilize Citizen RIMS to help with solving crimes faster.

The Records Information Management System, is an online information-sharing tool that provides real-time data on locations where crime is reported to have occurred including missing persons, calls for service, crime maps, and stolen vehicles.

The system has a feature that allows community members to identify locations where privately-owned video cameras are installed.

“We’re asking for residents to go online and if they have security systems at their house to register them register with us,” said Arcata’s Police Business Manager, Eileen Verbeck. “All that means is they just type in their address, what the camera’s recording, and if we have a crime in that area where video might be helpful. We can know who to contact.”

While this feature will provide Arcata Police Department with the locations where security cameras are located they will not have access to either directly or remotely monitor the camera systems.

The department said, this is one more way community members in Arcata can partner with and assist the Arcata Police Department with deterring and preventing crime.
