City of Arcata offers 11-week course to help parents with strong-willed kids

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) A 30-year-old program started by a psychologist, correctional officer, and community members is back for its annual 11-week course.

Loving Solutions is an 11-week series that help assist parents of strong-willed children to create healthy routines that increase wanted behaviors.

The series also offers families local resources and additional family support.

This class is for parents of children ages 5 to 10 years old.

Crystal Perez, a juvenile diversion counselor, said the course was developed after local law enforcement repeatedly made house-visits to find that at-home interventions weren’t working.

Perez also said, the series is a good way to build a support system among parents who are struggling.

“We talk about the difference between controlling a child and influencing a child’s behavior,” said Perez. “How to increase those wanted behaviors and decrease those unwanted behaviors so whether it’s fighting, arguing, or just daily tasks that you want your kids to do.”

The course is from September 9th to November 22nd from 6 to 8 PM
at the Arcata Elementary School.
