Volunteers to restore, enhance trails for National Public Lands Day

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) Rain or shine, Arcata’s Environmental Services Department and the Humboldt Trails Council will lead a trail work day in honor of National Public Lands Day, this weekend.

National Public Lands Day is the largest single-day volunteer effort for U.S. public lands.

Saturday, the city of Arcata along with volunteers will help clean up trails near the city’s community forest.

The group will prepare at least 5 different trails for the upcoming winter months.

Mark André, Director of Arcata’s Environmental Services, will discuss the city’s community forest updates, including the annual timber harvest and what steps need to be taken now that it has been completed.

André will also join in on the efforts.

“Mostly light maintenance, new construction this time, maybe repairing some bridges, and raking leaves from the recent rainstorm,” said André. “Every day really is public lands day in Arcata”

Participants are asked to meet at 9 AM at the Diamond Drive Trailhead before walking to the work sites. Volunteers of all ages are welcome.
