Illegal Encampment Cleaned Up In Eureka

EUREKA, Ca. (KIEM) – More than 4,500 pounds of trash have been removed from an illegal homeless encampment in Eureka.

A large encampment in the greenbelt near the foot of Hilfiker was discovered last month by the Eureka Police Department Community Safety Enhancement Team.

The encampment had shelters, walkways, large amounts of trash, five gallon buckets filled with human waste, and a 55 gallon drum filled with a flammable substance.

C.S.E.T. immediately began the removal of the camp and worked with many community partners to offer employment, housing, mental health services, substance abuse treatment, and transportation services for the people living in the camp.

On Monday, C.S.E.T. partnered with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Work Alternative Program to conduct a clean-up sweep and removal of the camp.
