Teen injured after assault on Hammond Trail

MCKINLEYVILLE, Ca (KIEM)-A teenage boy is in stable condition after he was assaulted on the Hammond Trail in McKinleyville.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Hiller and School Road just after 3 pm Tuesday where they found the teenager injured.

The sheriff’s office said the victim was taking a walk with his family when 19-year-old Kyle Berger hit the victim in the head from behind. Authorities say Berger was confronted by the victim’s family and he reportedly assaulted a woman and stole her phone.

Berger fled the scene and was followed by witnesses to a residence on the 16-hundred block of Fischer Road. Deputies took Berger into custody and transported him to jail.

Berger was booked on suspicion of robbery, felony battery, and child abuse.
