Sheriff Honsal on Driving during Shelter in Place, Number of Citations Issued So Far

Humboldt County, Ca. (KIEM) — Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal is shedding some light on whether or not going for a drive is allowed under the shelter in place mandate.

It’s one of the big questions they’ve received recently. Is it okay to get out of the house and drive through the redwoods? As far as Sheriff Honsal is concerned, driving is okay!

We are a large county with a lot of open space for people to recreate on their own, and for some, you can’t always easily walk to outdoor areas. For those who violate the limitations already in place, they could be fined. So far, a few warnings have been given, but zero citations have been issued by the sheriff’s office.

HCSO understands getting outside can be therapeutic, but asks everyone to respect the closures that are already in place. They advise residents to double-check which parks are open and what areas are accessible before leaving home.
