Humboldt County, Ca. (KIEM) — First District Supervisor Rex Bohn drafted a letter asking Governor Newsom to lift the statewide shelter in place order and allow rural counties to spearhead their own re-opening efforts. After a recent announcement from Newsom, the board changed course.

Bohn feels that after Newsom’s press conference on Monday, the letter is now a moot point. That sentiment is shared by a handful of other supervisors.

3rd District Supervisor Mike Wilson voiced concern over some confusing language in the letter. He understands a one size fits all approach may not work in this situation, but doesn’t want to jeopardize the relationship the county has with the state.

According to Bohn, the driving idea wasn’t to create a divide between state and local agencies, but rather acknowledging that when it comes to Covid-19 there are some key differences between rural and more populated counties.

Ultimately, the letter was not sent, but it’s not completely off the table. The Board of Supervisors will be closely monitoring the progress of re-opening plans and can send a letter in the future if they feel the need to.
