Grant allows for local drive-thru distribution events

ARCATA, Ca. (KIEM)- Due to job losses amid COVID-19 food banks and pantries are seeing an increase in demand for food.

To meet the increasing demand, “Food for People” hosted a drive-thru distribution event at the Arcata Community Center Wednesday.

There were 600 boxes available for distribution, each box contains enough food for a family of five which should last about three days, according to the organizers.

Organizers decided to start the event about 30 minutes earlier than scheduled when a long-line of cars began to form.

Food for people says the Eureka event attracted more than 400 cars, to avoid a traffic jam, traffic control officers were posted at various locations.

Those without a vehicle but in need of food, can go the Arcata food pantry at Trinity Baptist Church located at 2450 Alliance Rd. (across from Murphy’s Market) which is open from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Wednesday.

“Food for People” organizers say a grant made the event possible.

A food distribution event in Fortuna is in the works, a date has not been set.
