Arcata Police Department budget cut by nearly $1 million

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM) – Nearly three-quarters of a million dollars will be cut from the Arcata Police Department’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

Due to COVID-19, lives and businesses have been severely impacted.

In Arcata, it is estimated that over $1 million in revenue were lost following the dramatic changes.

Arcata city officials released a budget overview that reduces expenditures by over $1.3 million with APD taking the biggest cut.

Vacant positions, over hire positions and police equipment are just a few examples of the holds that are to be implemented.

But Chief of Police, Brian Ahearn reassures the community that these cuts will not impact public service.
