EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM)-With rallies planned across the country in support of the United States Postal Service – Humboldt was no different.

A handful of community members took to the streets to voice their disapproval of the current post master and the state of the current postal system amid COVID-19.

Michele Walford is a 30-year retired postal worker who organized Saturday’s rally.

“The mail service is part of our Constitution it is part of the fabric of our country, we cannot have this taken apart it will destroy our democracy,” she said.  “They need to be able to do their work without fear ( with) of mail hampering, cut off times of not being able to get all the mail out it’s destructive for everyone.”

Walford says, she organized the rally to urge others to take a stand for the rights of private citizens to have a universal, low cost mail delivery system.

The American Postal Workers Union has chosen August 25th as “A Day of Action” and has invited their members and supporters to gather at local post offices through-out the country -to stop harmful service cuts and mail delays and demand 25bil. in COVID-19 related emergency funding, according to APWU.

Walford says, rural areas such as the north coast are in desperate need of continuous reliable mail service.

“It’s their only connection to the outside world in a lot of places, without this things can go very bad, very quick there,” she said. “There is no reason to be doing this, other than to privatize, to make a few people extremely wealthy at the expense of private citizens.”

Walford says, the Humboldt community will join in the “Day of Action” and will host another local rally on August 25th.
