Humboldt Bay Fire shares tips to keep your home safe this Fire Prevention Week

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — It’s fire prevention week and the Humboldt Bay Fire Department is reminding the community how important it is to be prepared. The theme this year is serving up fire safety in the kitchen, but another big focus this year is wildfire prevention.

The most important thing you can do to help make sure your home is safe is to make sure there is 100 feet of defensible space around it. There are also different products you can apply to your roof or sidewalls of your home to be more fire retardant. According to HBF, 90 to 99% of all wildfires are human caused.

“We’re an all hazard department, so we not only do structure fires we respond to the wildland as well. We still have one of our engines out on the August Complex fighting. The idea that we can help prevent some of these tragic, record-breaking, enormous wildfires. We definitely want to help encourage the community to do that and help empower them to be fire safe and fire conscious,” community risk reduction specialist Amy Conlin says.

You can check out Humboldt Bay Fire’s YouTube page and social media accounts where they’ll be posting fire prevention tips and videos all week long.
