HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)-Joel – who went for a shark costume this year – was one of many kids dressed up for a Halloween activity at Cooper Gulch.

“It’s different this year but we’re still going to have fun,” said Joel.

Joel says, he had fun but looks forward to what’s waiting at home.

“A dragon egg hunt at my house,” he said.

Events such as dragon egg hunt have replaced treat or treating – for some – this year amid the COVID pandemic.

Arcata Resident Joe Hall let his kids get dressed up for the occasion.

“Oh, yeah were just taking all the extra precautions that we can, and letting them live their lives,” he said.

Arcata resident Rebecca Watling says, she’s will enjoy the holiday despite COVID-19.

“So, celebrating during COVID-this is it, this is the only place I plan on going today, it out at the Farmer’s market where everyone’s wearing masks, and hopefully keeping their distance,” she said. “And then I plan on being at home the rest of the day,  maybe watching a movie later, baking some cookies.”

Bob Hollmann and Lilly Simmons say, this is their first Halloween together.

“We’re just going with the punches here,” said Hollmann.

“Yep, just going out in the morning today checking out what’s going on and handing out candy from home,” said Hollmann.

Executive Director Charlotte McDonald with Eureka Main Street says, they wanted to do a little something for the kids.

“Kids are the ones that really don’t understand what’s going on, you know, they’ve had their friends taken away,” she said. “They’ve had school taken away from them and this is probably the biggest event for them.”

“We wanted kids to still have little normalcy, to what is not normal anymore,” McDonald said.

No matter how kids, adults or pets chose to celebrate Halloween this year, it was all about having a good time.

“Going somewhere fun, and having fun times on Halloween,” said Joel.
