Equity Arcata’s Home Away From Home Working Group set to host distribution event for college students

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM) — Equity Arcata’s Home Away from Home working group is hosting a distribution event for local college students this weekend.

College students can pick-up a free pre-packaged meal, household supplies, and other things to keep warm this winter at the D Street Neighborhood Center this Saturday, December 12th. Due to Covid-19, the event will be physically distanced. The group is also asking for donations.

According to communications working group chair for Equity Arcata, Cati Gallardo, it’s all about connecting college students with the local community they live in.

“There are a lot of college students who won’t be going home for the holidays because it isn’t as safe to travel with the pandemic, and also, there are a lot of college students that stay in Arcata and in greater Humboldt County to work, they have jobs and are a part of this community. Basically, it’s a way to build that bridge and let college students know that the community here really cares about them,” Gallardo says.

To donate, you can call (707) 601-4247 or (707) 825-2100 to arrange a time to drop off items at Arcata City Hall. Donations will be accepted until December 11th.
