Humboldt County to receive 975 doses of Covid-19 vaccine, could arrive as early as next week

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — A potential Covid-19 vaccine is awaiting approval by the FDA. Once that happens, Humboldt County is set to receive about 975 doses in the initial phase of distribution.

Local health care workers could receive those first doses as soon as next week with the Pfizer vaccine expected to be shipped out between December 14th and 18th, if approved.

The vaccines need to be stored in ultra-low temperatures. St. Joseph hospital in eureka has secured a negative 80 degree freezer in preparation.

“I think not only having the vaccine, but the early evidence is this vaccine is very effective is very exciting, it’s wonderful. That’s true for the first two candidate vaccines with others in development,” Luskin-Hawk says.

The FDA is meeting for approval of the Pfizer vaccine on December 10th and for the Moderna vaccine on December 17th.
