HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)– Looking for something safe and healthy to get you out of the house over the holidays? Our reporter Cristy Kuhr spoke with State Parks Ranger Griff about just how easy it can be.

“We have a lot of parks that don’t have day use fees like Humboldt Redwood State
Park. You can come here, you can park, and you can see these beautiful redwoods. There’s only like 4.6% of the old growth left and these were projected by local people by large like Laura Mayhan and the Women’s Federation of California group. You can come here and you can explore all over the place and there’s trails, there’s AFA trails so there’s all kinds of people. I call ADA trails American Disability Act, I call him everybody trails because everybody can use them.” Says the National and Cultural Resource Interpreter for the North Coast Redwood District, Griff.

“They have gravel down, they’re called turnpikes. So they have a lot of gravel down and so they allow for wheelchairs and people with little kids or people with disabilities or older people where you can come and you don’t have to worry about sinking into the mud and slipping into the mud.”

Don’t let the rainy weather discourager you.

“It’s not supposed to be totally stormy in the next few weeks might be a little drizzly. Just put on your raincoat jacket or bring an umbrella and come see the fungus that is out, the salamanders that are out. There’s a lot of things that are out this time of year that aren’t out during the summer. Also there’s less people out here so you can really have some space to explore and it’s easy to social distance and if you do see someone throw on your mask and everything’s cool.”

2021 is the 100 year anniversary of the Humboldt Redwoods State Park. Keep a look out for exciting speaker series and more celebrations throughout the year.
