Fishing vessels crashes into rocks off South Jetty, crew says Coast Guard saved their lives

LOLETA, Calif. (KIEM)-Three fishermen had to be rescued last night off the South Jetty, after their crabbing boat crashed.

“I was so shaken up did not calm down until I was able to hear his voice,” said Pandora Boling.

Pandora is the wife of a fisherman, and Sunday her worst fear came true, the boat her husband was on, crashed into surrounding rocks.

“This ocean around here is no joke we lost lives this year, because this ocean is nothing to play with,” she said.

Coast Guard Sector Humboldt Bay Watchstanders received a notification about 7: 42 p.m. from the crew of a 50-foot wooden-hulled fishing trawler Sun up, according to Petty Officer 2nd class Brandon Giles of the United States 11th Coast Guard District Public Affairs.

William Boling who was a deck hand on the Fishing Vessel Sun up knew they were in trouble when they lost their light source shortly after their auxiliary engine, similar to a generator, stopped working.

“Well, we lost our “gen set”, and of which gives us light, without the lights we couldn’t see how close the rocks we were,” he said.

A Coast Guard Station Humboldt Dolphin Helicopter and their 47-foot motor lifeboat crew were deployed.

William Boling says their survival suits were in the wheelhouse, which was under water, the crew however were equipped with personal floating devices, that deploy once submerged.

“They’re a good choice for keeping you safe while you’re out in the water,” he said.

This is the second crab boat within a week to lose power and ultimately sink.

William says he feels blessed to have survived the frigid and rough waters.

He and his crew credit the Coast Guard’s quick and professional response for saving their lives.

“Vessels lose power out here, you are at the mercy of the ocean,” he said. “Somebody out there was looking out for me; I believe in angels and God.”

All three fishermen were rescued before the vessel sunk, and according to William, the boat is a total loss.
