Global coronavirus variants could spark another potential surge in cases

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Earlier this week, Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman talked about another potential surge in Covid-19 cases. The main cause of concern is the different variants of the coronavirus.

Several have been identified globally, and while a few cases have been reported across the state there have been none locally. If those variants spread more widely in the coming weeks or months, we could see another surge.

Hoffman continues to advise against gatherings, still a big source of spread, and also encourage safety measures such as hand washing and wearing a face mask.

“All those things are going to help if we do those, just like we would with the coronaviruses that have been around so far. If the variants make their way here and start to spread, those are the same things that are going to help us drive down the rates and decrease the spread,” Hoffman says.

With the upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend, Hoffman adds that any holiday has the potential for spread and encourages everyone to continue to take precautions.
