Volunteer Fire Department recruitment challenged in pandemic

FORTUNA, Calif. (KIEM)-Volunteer fire fighters are becoming harder to recruit, and the pandemic has only added to the already stretched thin resource.

The Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department held a virtual job fair this week, and only two potential recruits took part.

Fortuna Fire captain Kyle Kertscher says recruitment has been down the past 10 years already.

“When you call 911 you expect certain amount of service,” he said.  “There is no 911 for us, right, if we run out of folk to respond. We can’t call somebody else to run our calls, and so we are really counting on people to step up and, you know, become part of community, give back, that’s the biggest take away from all this.”

Three distinctly different shift programs are available including a non-mandatory Volunteer Shift Program available to all members, Resident Volunteer Program for those seeking a career in public safety and attending a local college or university and a Volunteer Firefighter Intern Program designed to fulfill the experience requirement for those in pursuit of a CSFTES Firefighter 1 certificate.
