WOODLEY ISLAND, Calif. (KIEM)-Anyone who stopped by Woodley Island Monday may have been welcomed by the strong odor of fuel, the Coast Guard says they are aware.

Officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife were also on Woodley Island helping with the investigation.

Petty Officer First Class Scott Thomas with the Coast Guard received an alert Monday morning about a gas odor at the marina.

At about 8:30 a.m., Thomas arrived on-scene to investigate the odor’s origin, which could not be found, however, he did notice a sheen on the water’s surface and a strong odor in the air which spanned from A-dock, all the way to G-dock, according to Thomas.

Two experts were sent out, by the harbor master, to absorb as much of the unknown substance as they could.

Thomas says it will most likely take a few days for the remaining foreign substance to dissipate.

“This is an ongoing investigation, I’m out in the field right now,” Thomas said over the phone.

Thomas says it’s very important no one come in contact with the substance.

“Do not touch it, do not get it on your skin, do not try to clean it up yourself, there are people trained to do those types of things,” he said.  “As far as wildlife is concerned, the oiling of wildlife is always a concern.”

Thomas also said that his meter did not detect dangerous amounts of gas in the air but urges anyone who may know where the spill came from or if marine pollution is discovered in the future report it to the National Response Center at (800) 424-8802 immediately.
