HSU has a new program to help Latinx students in STEM

ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)- Humboldt State University has a new grant-funded program designed to support hands-on learning and career advancement for Latinx students in STEM.

The name of the program is Echale Ganas, which is an expression that means, “Go for it!”

The program is geared towards Latinx students working at the center of agriculture and natural resources, providing them with real world experience.

This program is a part of a university-wide effort to support first-generation students and create a sense of belonging for Latinx students in STEM.

“There just aren’t that many people in leadership roles that are part of the Latinx community,” said Laura Echavez, a Graduate Student Mentor for the program. “So, it’s important for those students at HSU to see somebody to look up to and know that they can achieve those same roles.”

The program will also offer internships for undergraduate students in agriculture, aquaculture and conservation.
