MCKINLEYVILLE, CALIF. (KIEM)-Multiple agencies responded last night to a structure fire on the 1700-block of Babler Road in McKinleyville.

The one-story single-family home destroyed after a fire ripped through the structure, the homeowner losing nearly everything.

At about 6:45 Wednesday night, Arcata fire district was dispatched to a reported structure fire, crews arrived within two minutes, to the home 50% consumed by flames.

Arcata Fire District’s Battalion Chief Sean Campbell says working smoke-alarms alerted the occupants, saving their lives.

The dog, however, didn’t make it out, and was killed in the fire.

Derrick and Sydney, who only wanted to use their first names, say they can empathize with the owners.

“Me and my boyfriend and a roommate we experienced a fire in our apartment and it was really scary, and I just know what it feels like,” she said.

“I can kind of relate, without losing the dog I mean we lost our apartment last year from a neighbor having a fire, yeah it’s definitely sad,” he said.

The family received a $250 dollar Visa gift card from the Arcata Firefighters Local 4981, who help families displaced by fire.
