Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman highlights housing successes during the pandemic in first State of the City video

EUREKA, Calif. (KIEM) — Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman is using her weekly video addresses to give residents an update on the current state of the city with the latest one focusing on housing.

Housing has been a priority for the Eureka City Council since before the Coronavirus pandemic began and even more so during it. The housing element was adopted by the city in 2020, which led to the selection of 3 parking lots across the city that can used for affordable housing developments.

“Linc Housing was selected to develop housing on all three lots, which will be located at 8th and G Streets, 6th and M Streets, and Sunny and Myrtle. Together the developments will provide 107 units, both 2 and 3 bedrooms, which will be available for those who make anywhere from 30-80% of median salary,” according to Eureka Mayor Susan Seaman.

In the last year, Uplift Eureka has secured permanent housing for 25 people. Housing has been secured for 8 others so far in 2021

“The program works using Housing First Principals but relies on landlords and property owners to make homes available. By building on existing relationships with landlords and property managers, offering landlord incentives, and highlighting past successes, Uplift has been able to secure permanent housing for folks who have previously faced substantial barriers,” Seaman says.

The city has also worked on keeping people housed. A 5% increase in water and wastewater rates was postponed. The city also passed an eviction moratorium. Worried that simply deferring rent payments would only put off financial stress, the council took it one step further.

“This was also a challenge for landlords who relied on that income. At that time, the City set aside $200,000 in Housing Succession Agency funding for residential assistance for past due rent, and to nonprofits who support housing,” Seaman adds.
