How soon Humboldt County can reach herd immunity dependent on vaccine supply

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — As the roll out of Covid-19 vaccines continues, some are already looking ahead to when Humboldt County might be able to achieve herd immunity.

As more people get vaccinated, especially those who are highest risk and most vulnerable, the amount of virus circulating in the community will exponentially decrease. When looking to reach herd immunity, vaccine task force member Lindsey Mendez says you have to think about supply. It’s uncertain when exactly that will happen for Humboldt because the exact amount of vaccine the county will receive in the future is unknown.

“Just like we’ve been doing in the past where we’ve been protecting our community members. We’ve been masking, we’ve been social distancing, and we’ve been washing our hands so we can have an effort for our neighbors and for those most vulnerable. That’s what we’re going to be doing with the vaccine at this time. We’re going to continue to care in that way and prioritize those who can help us achieve herd immunity and continue to put shots in arm and empty our freezers every week like we’ve been doing since we got vaccine,” Mendez says.
