HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman went before the Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning with an update on vaccinations, and what meeting a statewide goal would mean for Humboldt County’s tier assignment.

In recent weeks, there’s been a slight increase in the supply of Covid-19 vaccines making their way to Humboldt County. With an average of over 5,000 doses being allocated to the County each week.

“We’re expecting that this availability of an increase will continue through April and into May, and could even grow larger as supply of the new vaccine Johnson and Johnson becomes larger, and efforts to increase the supply of Pfizer and Moderna are underway,” according to Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman.

Supply continues to be an issue when it comes to how quickly the County can get shots into arms. Vaccinations are currently open to all of phase 1A, all of phase 1B, people 65 years old and older, and also, people 16 to 64 years old with certain underlying medical conditions.

“However, it’s very important to recognize that due to limited supply of the vaccine, not all these groups are going to be able to get vaccinated immediately,” Hoffman adds.

The state of California’s effort to vaccinate communities in the lower quartile of the healthy places index has reached its 2 million dose goal. The focus is now on getting 4 million doses into those areas. Once that happens, the cutoff for the orange tier will go from 4 cases per 100,000 residents to 6 per 100,000.

“This will very likely allow us to get into the orange tier metric sooner than if we don’t meet that goal,” Hoffman says.

Hoffman expects Humboldt to remain in the red tier for at least 2 weeks or more. If metrics remain stable, a move to orange could happen sometime in April. More vaccine information, and also an interest form, can be found at www.humboldtgov.org.
