ARCATA, Calif. (KIEM)-A nearly $950,000 grant for a Humboldt State University professor will help open doors for under-represented stem students.

The National Science Foundation Grant will support, for the next five years, HSU Biology Professor Catalina Cuellar-Gempeler’s research on the effects of colonizing microbes on carnivorous plants.

Her goal is to pave the way for a new and a more diverse generation of scientists who specialize in ecology, molecular biology, and bioinformatics, and wants to capitalize on growing a diversity of college students in the stem field.

Research associate David Marshall has worked in the stem field for nearly 40 years and says diversity is important.

“We’ve known for many, many years that STEM fields are not represented equally across all of society. The National Science Foundation and people working at universities are really focusing on that right now. Diversity in representation will make for better problem solving in the future.”
