Hour-long delays on Highway 36

Highway 36 is no stranger to construction, with three controlled traffic stops already happening between just east of Carlotta, and just west of Dinsmore. While other construction stops dotting the highway promise around ten-minute delays, Monday and Tuesday, motorists can expect to spend an hour in their vehicles waiting west of the Devils Elbow picnic area, according to CalTrans. The Monday and Tuesday hour-delays are due to a slide in the area and working to mitigate the recurring slides by installing a rockfall mitigation system. Though inconvenient, this will hopefully help to lessen stops along the highway overall.

Highway 36 is a major east-west thoroughfare that runs from Fortuna to near red bluff, then into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to Susanville. In Humboldt and Trinity counties, though, this is a major route to the coast, and sometimes, the only route.  for those who live east of the closure, like those in the communities of Bridgeville, Dinsmore, Mad River, and Hayfork be impacted.

Highway 36 is a popular destination for motorcycle enthusiasts as it weaves through mountains, redwoods and along rivers like the Trinity and Van Duzen.

Highway 36 should be back to regular construction in the area by Wednesday, May 22.
