HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM)- Every year, since 1967, The Humboldt International Film Festival has been put on by students from Humboldt State University to bring films from all across the globe to its audiences, and this year was no exception.

HSU students have produced the internationally recognized event for 54 years, making it the oldest student-run film festival in the world.

For the second year in a row, the festival has been held virtually, but with reduced COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event was able to add an in-person element.

“We were able to have some events at the minor this year. So, that was in-person and limited capacity but we were able to have some cool films being shown there,” said Matt Brown, Co-Director of the Humboldt International Film Festival. “This was actually the first year that we did a virtual film festival.”

This year, 182 films from 25 different countries were reviewed by film students who then selected 31 submissions for the festival.

Then those films competed for the highest scores, audience rankings and cash rewards in four categories: narrative, documentary, animation and experimental.

This year two new categories were added.

“One was self-care and wellness during COVID. So, a focus on mental health awareness and self-care and wellness,” said Brown. “Our second new category was, in solidarity with Black Lives Matter.”

The directors of the film festival said that the purpose of the event is to promote the art of film, not only as entertainment, but as a platform for dialogue.

“I think film festivals and our specifically, allows these film makers and people viewing these films to kind of get comfortable with the uncomfortable and just sit there and be in it, in that moment and really give you that perspective,” said Kylie Holub, Co-Director of the Humboldt International Film Festival.

The film festival ends Sunday, April 25. So, if you would like to view some of the films featured in the festival, click here.
