Some local kids experiencing more anxiety, depression symptoms during the pandemic

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif. (KIEM) — The Coronavirus pandemic has impacted us all in different ways and children are no different. The Humboldt County Behavioral Health team has noticed that local children have had varied responses to the pandemic.

When schools first sent everyone home, some kids were devastated and struggled with distance learning. Others felt comfortable and excelled. Local officials say some kids are showing more anxiety, depression, and crisis type symptoms. As students return to the classroom, some of these same issues are being observed.

“We’re also having more eyes on kids now that they’re back in school, so it’s kind of easier to flag those issues. Then there are some kids who are just really relieved to be back in school for all the reasons this group already knows, that they are reconnecting with peers, able to do the activities they want to be doing, joining sports, that type of thing,” according to Behavioral Health Director Emi Botzler-Rodgers.
