Prescribed Burns

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Calif.(KIEM) It was big plume of smoke that many saw rising from the South Spit of Humboldt Bay for hours on February 03, 2022. Officials tell us the fire causing that smoke was not anything to worry about. It was a prescribed burn being conducted by The Bureau of Land Management. 

The burn was part of a project to remove piles of grass and small plants to improve coastal dunes and grasslands. The prescribed burn of 20-acres lasted from about 10 am until 5 pm. Even though the burn is now over officials say smoke from it could linger through the next day.
