Currently, the North Coast Rape Crisis Team that serves both Humboldt and Del Norte County has a volunteer program to become a California-certified sexual assault counselor.

“We do offer an 80-hour certified sexual assault training,” said Maria Sepulveda the bilingual client advocate and sexual assault counselor. “We have our next training cohort that is going to be starting in September and our application is available through our website.”

The program includes three-hour sessions three days a week. The topics discussed are sexual assault trauma and the different areas where it is seen by people. The requirements to start the training include being over 18 years old, having a reliable cell phone, a high school diploma, and being able to pass a background check. There is a $75 fee and that’ll go towards supplies and other items provided for the training.

“This is also a certification that if they so choose to go into a full-time position with us and/or another rape crisis, they might be a possibility,” Sepulveda said.
