Suspicious Object Found in Scotia

Scotia, California — On July 27, 2023 just after 12 pm, a call was made to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Emergency Communication Center with a report of a suspicious looking object, resembling a grenade, found in some brush on a walking trail near Pond Avenue in Scotia.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team went to investigate, with the Scotia Volunteer Fire Department assisting.

After inspection, EOD deputies determined the object is a modified Vietnam-era military submunition (a small weapon or device that is part of a larger warhead, which separates prior to impact). Deputies declared the ordnance safe at the scene.
