Newsmakers: Humboldt Bay Fire

Raising money for animal charities

REDWOOD NEWSMAKERS: For the past seven years, the Humboldt Bay firefighters have been hosting a 5K walk and run here at Sequoia Park in Eureka. And we just happened to run into Tyler Gillespie and Bronx. Hey, how are you guys doing?

TYLER GILLESPIE: We’re doing well. How are you.

REDWOOD NEWSMAKERS: Doing? Fine. So, tell us why your 5K run and walk is different than others.

TYLER GILLESPIE: Yeah, well, it’s called Bark in the park. The reason we call it bark in the park is you get to bring your dog with you. It’s a fun walk. Run. You can bring a dog, a stroller. Listen to AirPods, earbuds, whatever you want. And it’s a lot of fun.

REDWOOD NEWS: Totally a family affair.

TYLER GILLESPIE: It’s a great family event. Not a lot of rules other than, you know, be respectful of everyone, bring a dog leash and let’s pick up after our furry friends.

REDWOOD NEWS: This event raises funds for a different animal charity each year. Who is it this year?

TYLER GILLESPIE: Yeah. So, every year we do pick a new charity. And this year, the California Rescue Dog Association. They raise funds for volunteers who have search and rescue dogs that will go and help local sheriff’s departments or whatever rescue agency is helping locate missing people. It could be in the wilderness areas; it could be around town. But all the money goes to reimbursing these dog owners and the dogs themselves for all their medical needs, their food, their shelter, all of that.

REDWOOD NEWS: So, it’s a great idea for you and your dog to get out and get healthy exercise.

TYLER GILLESPIE: Yeah, exactly. This is a great opportunity to take your dog out, bring the whole family, go for a nice walk, or run. I know the dogs will appreciate it. And you might as well come get a T-shirt and donate to a good cause.

REDWOOD NEWS: So, tell us again, when is the event? Where is it? All those kinds of things.

TYLER GILLESPIE: Yeah, it’s going to be Saturday, October 21st, right here in Sequoia Park. The race is at 10 a.m., you can pre-register between eight and nine the day of. We encourage everyone to go online. You can look up Humboldt Bay fire and go to our either Facebook or Instagram and we’ll have links that you can sign up for a race. Make sure you reserve that T-shirt. They’re going to be pretty cool this year, and we look forward to seeing everyone out here.

REDWOOD NEWS: BRONX and Tyler Gillespie from HUMBOLDT BAY FIRE. What’s that slogan?

TYLER GILLESPIE: Why not go for a run with your best friend?

REDWOOD NEWS: That’s it! Hey, thanks a bunch. And we’ll see you on Saturday, October 21st.

TYLER GILLESPIE: Sounds good.
