play-sharp-fill

Homelessness and the lack of mental health care is a huge problem in California.

The four candidates running for District 2 State Assemblymember shared their thoughts on how they would like to create a safer and healthier community for all.

Candidate Michael Greer stated:

“We have spent billions of dollars on these issues and what we see is increased homeless populations, more individuals with mental health and drug issues. We need to go a different direction because it is obvious that what we are doing isn’t working.”

Candidate Rusty Hicks said:

“We must… invest in proven solutions like quality shelter and supportive services like mental health and addiction treatment, job training, and employment opportunities. By building a safety net that uplifts those experiencing homelessness, we can ensure real pathways towards stability and self-sufficiency.”

Healdsburg City Council Member Ariel Kelley said:

“Some of the work that I am most proud of from my time on city council is the work that we have done to solve homelessness in our community. During my tenure, we built our city’s first-ever homeless shelter. …we brought the business community to the table with advocates and government leaders to discuss rules that the shelter and its residents had to follow to retain shelter, and were able to craft specific policies to solve their concerns.”

And Chris Rogers stated:

“I support care courts and their expanded use, as well as increased investment in regional mental health and drug rehab services. I think it is more humane to force someone into treatment than to allow them to degrade on the street. this is better for the individual, and better for the community and businesses being impacted.”
