Biking to work or just for fun can come with a lot of benefits.

“Well, first and foremost, biking is a form of transportation, and it’s an alternative to driving. It’s an easy way to get around. It’s a lot of fun, has health benefits and can save people money. So there are a lot of good reasons to support bicycling”, says Stevie Luther, associate regional planner of Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCOAG).

“Just 20 minutes of bicycling a day can help prevent all sorts of, you know, diseases and help improve your health”, he says.

Bike month falls during the perfect time of year to get out on two wheels.

“We do appreciate the nice spring and summer weather and our mild temperatures. And that. Yeah. Of course, having good bicycle infrastructure is important. So our cities are working on adding bike lanes and making it safer and more comfortable for people to bike”, Luther says.

Local businesses also make things fun by offering deals and discounts to those who arrive on bicycles.

“Yeah, there’s a whole list of over 20 participating businesses. Many of them have been doing it for a long time. And then they also get a lot of prize donations that we’re able to give out to folks as rewards for participating in biking”, Luther says.

You can also collect a free bike helmet at the Humboldt County Association of Governments at I street in Eureka.
