EUREKA – Eureka is another step closer to having art-covered utility boxes.

Eureka Development Services Director Rob Holmlund said, “It’s a real good opportunity to get local artists employed in our community and to eliminate blight and the opportunities for graffiti and vandalism.”

The Arts and Culture Commission approved all sixteen submitted designs at its regular meeting Tuesday. Commissioners commented on the wide variety of style and substance represented.

The group evaluated each design based on artistic excellence, appropriateness of form and content as well as relationship to Eureka’s history and culture. Though all were approved, the city currently has funding in place for six boxes. Designs not chosen for the initial phase will be added once additional funding is secured.
