FORTUNA – Middle school students are now able to enjoy safer routes to school thanks to the Safe Routes to School Project.

This week the Toddy Thomas Middle School in Fortuna cut the ribbon on their new safety project that will help ensure safe routes to and from school. The Safe Routes to School Project began in 2012 and was granted funding in 2015. Today the students and faculty are able to enjoy more travel friendly routes for those walking, biking, or rolling to school. The project includes new crosswalks, as well as lighted signs and more sidewalks. The school has also provided interactive assembly’s to teach the students about travel safety on their commute.

The school says they hope the new enhancements will encourage more students and facility to walk or ride their bikes to school.
