Fortuna submits grant application to expand Newburg Park

FORTUNA, CA. – After dreaming up possibilities for new parks, Fortuna submits a grant request to the state.

The Friendly City has considering purchasing a parcel adjacent to Newburg Park, as well as seven acres next to the Eel River Levee near Riverwalk Drive.

Last month residents brainstormed ideas of how’d like to see those areas used – such as for a dog park, a picnic area, or an outdoor concert arena.

Now, Public Works says they have submitted one of the two Land and Water Conservation Fund grant applications, for the Newburg Park acquisition.

Staff opted not to submit the Riverwalk Park application, due to insufficient time to negotiate with the property owner, or to complete the necessary environmental analysis.

They expect to hear the results of the grant request within four to six months.
