Phone scams claiming to gather money for fire victims

Phone scams are going around today from people claiming to be from an organization gathering money for fire victims and local volunteer fire departments.

Crime prevention specialist with the Fortuna Police Department tells us he has spoken to the fire chief and they have nothing to do with it. These scammers will ask residents to buy a cash card or pay through a debit card via phone. They will sound very friendly and give an elaborate story.

Enoch Ibarra, with Fortuna Police, tells us there is not much the police department can do legally, as many of the calls are coming from out of the country, but he says to never give personal information out over the phone. And to call the police if you feel something is suspicious.
