Eureka City Manager explores new ways to repair roads

EUREKA, CA. (KIEM) – The City of Eureka is exploring new ways to fund street maintenance. Last year’s Measure I road repair sales tax was not approved by voters, so currently the states transportation funding, of about $500,000 a year, is the cities only source of funding for new roads.

City Manager Greg Sparks says our annual needs are in the 3 million dollar range to repair about thirty years of decaying asphalt.

You may of notice 6th and 7th street received some updates during the summer that was funded by Senate Bill 1. How ever sparks is concerned that California’s push for zero-emission vehicles will lower the revenue generated by the gas tax. Which is why he is urging council to consider a general tax to be put on the 2020 ballot.
