HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Ca. (KIEM) – Over the last several days, swarms of quakes have struck throughout the North Coast.

According to the Northern California Earthquake Data Center, since Friday there have been 12 recorded quakes.

Former Humboldt State University Geology Professor Lori Dengler says, the area of Mendocino is a very seismically active area because of a spot called Triple Junction. She adds, parts of the North Coast experiences more earthquakes than Los Angeles or San Francisco.

“Humboldt County and the Mendocino triple junction area, and the offshore area of Humboldt County is the single most seismically active area of the 48 states,” said Dengler.

But the biggest question, do these small quakes mean the big one is coming soon?

“The short answer is no,” said Dengler, “but we are always at risk of a bigger earthquake.”

Dengler says earthquakes can happen anytime and the last time a powerful earthquake struck coast was about 7 years ago.

Experts says it’s a good idea to always be prepared. Make sure to stock up on food, water, and create an emergency plan.
