MCKINLEYVILLE, Ca. (KIEM) – Schools from all across North Coast gathered at McKinleyville high school for a cultural conference dedicated to help uplift and empower Native American youth.

“Native American youth are often taken advantage of and forgotten about, says Alyssa Watson, treasurer of the Native American Club. “I think that helping our community find their resources and get their mind open to what could happen in their future.”

“College, Career, Culture” was theme of this year’s success in both worlds conference. The conference aims to help Native American but also inspires younger generations to pursue a higher education.

“This conference is to have these people come together to all learn from each other,” said club president Pectasasan Felaz.

But this event also empowers Native American youth because it’s something that’s created for them.

“There’s not many native youth events that go on and it’s something to be proud of that we can organize this and have everybody come together,” said club secretary Phoebe Sundberg

This event not only teaches students about culture and history. But also the opportunities that await them.

Despite the struggles that history has shown, the students sitting in the audience will be leading the next generation.

They want their culture, tradition, and future to live on.

The Success in Both Worlds Conference happens every two years.
