Former Arcata Restaurant Owner killed in New York City by State Trooper

Arcata, Ca., (KIEM) 41-year-old Luke Patterson former chef and owner of Luke’s Joint and The Other Place in Arcata; was fatally shot by New York State Police around 2 AM Thursday, while walking along on the shoulder of a highway North of New York City.

According to the New York Times, troopers initially responded to a report of a disabled vehicle that had been abandoned in a traffic lane.

Officials said, after moving the car, police spotted Patterson walking alone along the westbound shoulder.

According to reports, the troopers got out to speak with Patterson, in which officials said, Patterson allegedly did not cooperate, refused to comply with any commands, and ignored law enforcement multiple times.

Officials said Patterson allegedly made a sudden movement to try and open the door of the police car and that’s when the trooper opened fire.

Patterson had recently sold the two Arcata restaurants and returned to the Catskill Village where his parents had a summer home.

Patterson was unarmed. NYPD is investigating the fatal shooting.
