Cost of Living in California Impacts Struggling and Low Income Families

HUMBOLDT COUNTY (KIEM) – With skyrocketing housing prices, high cost of living, and the summer season here it can be a struggle to get food on the table for many families.

CalFresh is a federally funded program that serves low income and struggling families, and is the state’s federal food stamp program.

According to California Food Policy Advocates, if all eligible residents in Humboldt County applied for CalFresh about $16.5 million federal dollars would be allocated to the county.

Cal Matters Says, 72% of California residents were enrolled in the CalFresh program in 2016.

But the reason why it’s difficult for families to apply for CalFresh is because the process can seem daunting.
