ARCATA (KIEM) – School may be out of session, but several students at Humboldt State are developing software that can revolutionize the way students and teachers search for information.

Imagine combing through multiple sources, trying to find that one piece of information to help you create your perfect paper.

“Imagine faculty having to read every single source for a research paper that has thirty different citations,” said Citing Insights Project Manager and HSU graduate Benjamin Miller.

It could take hours to find the right source.

“That’s not feasible,” said Miller. “What we’re doing is we’re creating a shortcut put those sources right in front of them along with the research paper.”

A team at Humboldt State is creating new technology that could help the way students write and research.

“What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to provide context clues to sort of determine whether or not the research they’re doing is good,” said Miller.

With a simple click, Citing Insight will also help teachers guide and assess students in their learning.

“Our goal with the software is to create a way for faculty to look at not only the sources that students are citing but the paper itself,” said Miller.

They’ve been developing this software since March.

“From there it’s been a five month sprint to get this prototype out, so it’s been short but sweet,”

This smart software could be the first of its kind. The end goal is to provide students with a tool that can help better process their information.

“Ultimately I think it’s going to provide assessing information literacy a lot easier,” said Miller.

The team plans to start alpha testing in September, but they plan to rollout the prototype program by next summer.
